Day 2 - 7/1/2005 - And on to the first highpoint...
The first "wakeup" of the trip always feels like the start. Its hard to feel like you're really traveling if you wakeup in your own bed. The goal today is to "summit" Campbell Hill in Ohio, then conquer Hoosier Hill in Indiana, and then cover as many miles as we can on our way to Charles Mound on Saturday.
Campbell Hill, Ohio is to say the most - small. (Click here for a description of Campbell Hill and pictures.) Outside of some minor access issues, we were in and out in about 30 minutes with pics, geo readings, etc. From there we ambled across western Ohio and just into Indiana. Hoosier Hill is just inside the border, and at 1200+ feet is about 300 ft lower than Campbell Hill. (Click here for a description of Hoosier Hill and pictures.) We have been traveling using a highpointing book that is several years old, and the highpoint had been "overhauled" for an Eagle Scout project and was quite nice.
After navigating our way south to the Interstate, we started the long drive toward Charles Mound - the Illinois highpoint. As I thought about the webpage updates, I realized I had not updated my laptop with the changes since our last trek in January. We decided to hit a hotel in Peru, IL, where I spent about 4 hours getting the new website (for this trip) setup. It should get easier and faster from this point on.
After a good night's sleeep and some more web work, we are off to Charles Mound.
