Day 7 - 7/22/2004 - Strike 2 - we're out!!!
Okay - Katahdin was not meant to be. The mountain's Karma ran over my dogma. This morning I woke up with the ankle a little to stiff to make the 10-mile, 4200 ft elevation gain across numerous boulder fields. While it is possible that I could make it, it's just not worth endangering the other highpoints and the rest of the trip. Besides, we both love lobsters, so it gives us an excuse for another trip.
Since it was 4:30 am and we were already packed, we decided to hit the road for Mt Washington. We droped off our rented video (Starship Troopers II - don't bother), and cruised through Bangor, and on through western Maine. About 11:30 am we made it to the base of Mt. Washington. $24.00 and 24 minutes later, we were at the top - in a cloud. By Mt. Washington standards it was a beautiful day. The link below is to new pictures.
After driving down the mountain, we drove through Gorham NH and Hunter had a chance to go swimming at the community swimmin' hole. In the town, they have a city beach on a mountain stream that is very nice and quiet.
After the swim, we drove on to Stowe VT, in preperation for our ascent of Mt. Mansfield - the highest point in VT. We found a nice little campground just south of Stowe, which is where I am writing this.
