Mt. Mansfield can be a very surprising hike. On a cloudy day, it is just another slog up amongs bolders with no view. When the weather clears, it can only be described as spectacular. The hike itself is a mixture of small rocky sections, interspersed with nice ridge walking. The Green Mountain crew does an outsanding job of protecting the mountain and it's fragile ecosystem. They maintain a very visible presence on the mountain as protectors and educators - and it is greatly appreciated.
The begin the hike, you must first drive up the toll road ($18.00). This will lead you to a very nice visitor center and the wonderful folks of Green Mountain. On this particular morning it was 41 degrees (july 24th), so pack a jacket.
We started the hike about 9:30, and were at the summit by 10:20 (and we did not rush). It is not very steep, but faily rocky. The summit view is super if the weather is good. We were able to clearly see Lake Champlain, and up and down the valley. We heard Mt. Washington can been seen, as can Mt. Marcy, but there were some scattered clouds that preveented this.
I highly recommend this hike!
