Day 9 - 7/24/2004 - Mt. Mansfield and onward.
Well, the rain finally stopped, and we had a beautiful evening in Burlington VT. Vermont, in general, has left many residents stuck in the 60's. That is not not to say this old conservative dog did not find it enlightening. Liberalism is somewhat quaint, since we can all associate it with our younger, idealistic days. However, most of us outside of Vermont chose to grow up and get jobs (oopss...does that make me a "liberal"???) So a trip back to 1968 ala Ben and Jerry was a pleasant diversion ("No Nukes, No Nukes...")
Mt. Mansfield was actually quite spectacular. Once the clouds parted, the views of the valleys really opened up. We got some great picures, which should be accessible on the link below. The hike itself was uneventful, which was good given the ankle problems. Still some stiffness though.
After Mansfield it was over Lake Champlain and on to Mt. Marcy in NY. Marcy is in the middle of the Adarondak range, and is a good sized mountain. As we neared Marcy (which is just south of Lake Placid), we started encountering "Expect Delays" signs up and down the road. It turns out we picked the same weekend as the Ironman Triathalon. Gobs of folks cycling up and down the roads. Needless to say, all of the campgrounds were full. We did manage to find a spot back in the woods in part of the national forest. We will see how everything fares for the Marcy Hike.
