I will apologize in advance for the blurry pictures...

South Carolina's Sassafras Mountain does not leave one with a lasting impression, unless you consider the bus/Winnebago that burned to the ground near the summit. The drive up is on a winding, sometimes steep road that terminates in a dirt parking lot.  On the drive up, it was difficult to identify the Sassafras summit, since it is on border, and there are surrounding mountains that look taller.  From the parking lot, it is just a short hike of less than a quarter of a mile to the true summit.  During our visit, the road to the summit (from the parking area) was not chained, but we hoofed it anyway.

There are a number of trails in the area, and it looks like there would be some good Fall or early Spring hiking (once the bugs have left). Leaving the parking area, we noticed a large metal monstrosity at the far end of the lot.  as we walked over, we could tell it was the charred remnants of either a bus or a Winnebago.  This thing looked like it burned hot and bright!!!  There was only steel left, and even the rubber on the tires had disintegrated, leading only the steel belt.  The pictures below do not do the scene justice (i.e. blurry), but this was more impressive than the highpoint!
