Mt. Arvon can be either a very simple (though time consuming) summit, or a difficult trip - all dependant upon the weather. The weather can range from bone-chilling arctic snow, to mosquito-laden forest. The day we went up, it was actually very dry and was fairly easy. If the sky had added a couple of inches of rain, this would have been a long hike instead of a van ride.
Leaving L'Anse traveling east brings you to a right turn onto Sawmill Road. This is the last pavement you will see for a while. After a couple of miles you reach "Church Road" (still labeled as Roland Lake Rd). A right on this will take you to Ravine River Rd., which you will follow almost all of the way to the summit parking area. During the drive on Ravine River road, you will pass a gravel pit, travel over an old wooden bridge, and pass numerous logging roads. Simply follow the blue diamonds to the summit parking area.
A quick note about road conditions. The roads can be easy to traverse (as they were on our trip) or covered with mud. The native rock in the area is slate, which is used extensively on these gravel roads. Slate can easily puncture a passenger tire, as we found just two miles into the trip (see photo below). Our puncture occurred on a tire that was just three months old, so be warned. If you have a jeep, you are in good shape.
Near the top is a parking area. On the day we drove up, we were behind a dozen jeeps that were going up. Jeeps (correctly equipped) can make it to the true summit in all but the worst conditions. Do NOT try it in anything but a 4x4.
Mt. Arvon holds the distinction as the "Party Summit", given the large number of Jeepers up there for lunch.
