Although this is listed in many places as a "drive up", we ended up walking about 1/4 mile to reach the summit.  In retrospect we should have walked about 1.75 miles to reach it.  Of all of the highpoints we have done, this was probably the most dangerous.  Let me explain.

The road to the highpoint is a small one-lane road with very limited shoulder space in most areas.  While this is usually not a problem (come on, we're highpointers!), in this case the road is used HEAVILY by the coal company.  That means trucks, trucks, trucks!  The trucks seem to move in small convoys to minimize the chances of encountering traffic, but it still happens.  In our case, we were about 3/4 of the way to the highpoint and we were halfway up a small hill.  Suddenly (and at high speed) I see a coal truck locking up his brakes just as he crests the top of the hill.  There is a moment of "showdown", as I ponder just who will do what.  As I consider:

1) I am on their road,

2) There are 4 of them and 1 of me

3) I'm going uphill, and

4) The truck outweighs me by about 15 tons

I decided it was best to slowly backup to an area where I could find some shoulder, pull off, and let them by.  As I start to backup, I realize the road is SO narrow that there is no room for error.  I clip bushes, trees, etc.  It takes about 5 minutes of backing up before I reach a spot that will work.  We pull off, they pass by, and everything is fine.

We reached an area near the top (with a large radar dome - the FAA site).  The yellow gate to the summit was locked, so we hoofed the last 1/4 mile.  The top is fairly uneventful, and there really is not much of a view.  Due to high weeds (and the risk of falling into a mine) we were not able to wander much and did not locate the geo.

On the way down we drove at speeds of 60 mph at times (with one foot on the brake) to minimize the amount of time on the road.  My advise - walk (or better yet, bike) up the road to the highpoint!
