While Charles Mound may not be a summit the caliber of Mt. Elbert, it has a quaint charm that is difficult to match. We contacted the Wuebbels the day before our visit and Jean graciously sent us an email with directions and tips. We had no difficulty reaching the trailhead, and we were surprised that all of the parking spaces in the driveway were filled. After a short search, we found a pulloff on the road and started the hike. Although the hike us up a driveway, it meanders through woods and across rolling fields for about a mile and a quarter. I was surprised to notice that Charles Mound is rated as the 32nd hardest highpoint, but the trail has a slight amount of elevation that can wind you (we jogged much of it).
It is obvious that the Wuebbels take a great deal of pride in the highpoint. There is a small "park" with chairs and a commanding view of the valleys of Western Illinois. While there, we met many other highpointers, asking if they had moved the date and location of the convention. There were a couple of folks that had over 40 HP's, and one chap named Greg who was marking his 50th at Charles mound! We received a wealth of information on peaks such as King's Peak and Boundary.
I would like to thank the Wuebbels for continuing access, and for the care they exhibit in maintaining a natural treasure. On your visits please take care to leave the site cleaner than you left it.
