While it is not the highest, steepest, or hardest to reach, Hawkeye Point stands out by far as the friendliest highpoint thus far. We drove down from Minnesota and reached the Sterler Farm mid morning. As we pulled into the driveway to ask permission, Mr. Sterler greeted me at the door with a "Good Morning" and a hearty handshake. He was on his way to church, and gave us directions on how to find the highpoint by the water trough. He also asked us to sign the register and gram a souvenir keychain.
Hawkeye Point also ranks in my book as the most "All-American" highpoint. Not to say that the multitude of other highpoints don't have a special place in Americana, but when you stand on the stump at the highpoint, you can look out for miles over fields of grain. The fields run clear to the horizon, and you develop a true appreciation for the honest, hard-working folk that work these fields.
This was also one of the easier highpoints to find. Heading south on State Road 60 from MN, go across the border, and go about 7 miles. You will see a sign marking left turn for Hawkeye Point. The sign is just after "Polk Rd", and the actual street is 130 St.
Please stop and ask permission before proceeding. The Sterlers seem to appreciate their special relationship with highpointers, and I would hate to see that go by the wayside.
