Mount Magazine is a pleasant surprise amidst the gentle rolling terrain of Arkansas.  Given the reputation for a "poor" state, I was prepared for a highpoint that was rundown and not very clean - similar to what we had just seen in Mississippi.  To the contrary, Mount Magazine State Park is a beautiful park, and it is clear to see that the people of Arkansas are very proud of it.  It has a new visitor center, and the park itself is wonderfully clean and organized.  They were in the process of building a lodge on our visit.  They have been the only highpoint we have visited thus far to actually publish a pamphlet with information about the highpoint (even with info on Highpointers.org and Americasroof.com!).  Arkansas hereby receives our vote for "Most Pleasant Surprise"!

Parking in the camping area (at the bathhouse), it's a short walk (10 minutes) to the highpoint. At the geographic highpoint, you are greeted with a sign, and a large in-ground rock formation in the shape of Arkansas.  We signed the logbook and snapped some pics.  We met a couple from Texas who were there highpointing.  The guy was on quest to do the highpoints during winter.  He said he felt like he was cheating since it was in the 60's.
