Day 19 - 8/3/2004 - And now for Harney Peak...

The day started out looking rather rough (more rain), but nevertheless we decided we would at least take a look at the trail.  By the time we reached the trailhead the weather had cleared.  It was a fairly easy hike, and Hunter and I both did well.  The ankle did fine, but was sore that night.   For details and pictures of the hike, click below.

After Harney, we took the long way back through Hill City.  The roads in the area are fairly poor, and you encounter many dirt "highways".  The road back from Harney funneled down to a one-way tunnel on a two-lane road.  It was fun watching a bus try to squeeze through in the rain.  I don't know how they keep the buses from going off of the cliffs on the curvy roads (but I would hope if one does, that it is full of Iraqis with no empty seats!)  On the way we passed the Crazy Horse "work in progress".  Given the sheer size and the economics, you have to wonder if it will always be a work in progress.

That night we went into Keystone (the nearest large town).  They, like everyone else, were preparing for the big biker rally in Sturgis.  Hunter and I had a chance to try some new foods.  We have tasted the flesh of the buffalo and liked it!!  After a little more sightseeing, it was back to the campsite.

Shortly after we arrived, the night was interrupted by lights and sirens near our site.  A wreck?  A shooting?  A moose raping?  No - the next morning we found out there had been a fire on the mountain that was started by lightning.  Besides, no self-respecting South Dakotan would ever have to force himself on a moose!
