Day 14 - 7/29/2004 - Iowa and on to ????

After a nice late night thunderstorm in southern Minnesota, we were back on the road to the next highpoint - Hawkeye Point in NW Iowa.  The trip was very long and straight - given the terain.  We crossed the state line and proceeded down to the Sterler's Farm (location of the highpoint).

I can't say enough about how nice the people we have met have been on this trip.  Mr. Sterler greeted us at the door, and gave us permission to visit the highpoint, which is next to the water trough at the end of his barn.  Click here for pictures and a description of Hawkeye Point.

After logging the data and snapping some pics, we were back on our way.  This time it was all the way to the northwest corner of Minnesota to Eagle Mountain, and to hook up with some good friends (Dave and Beth).  We cruised through the St. Paul area and got in touch with Dave, who was picking up Beth at the Airport.  We met them on the road, and then stopped in Duluth for some great Mexican food.  By 9pm, it was back on the road up the coast.

It was a beautiful drive, with the moon just over the waters of Lake Superior, and painting a broad swath across the calm waters.  Dave had said that there might be Northern Lights that night, but the full moon was washing out any chance of seeing them.  We stayed at Dave's Vacation Villa, and thoroughly enjoyed the cool air and the warm waters of the hot tub.  Note to self - bring sandals before making the sprint from the hot tub to the beach across the sharp rocks.

 Tomorrow is Eagle Mountain.
